Google will be discontinuing Google Analytics 3 (aka Universal Analytics or UA) on July 1, 2023. The new version, Google Analytics 4 (aka GA4), is already available and many SiteSwan websites are already connected to GA4.
To determine which version of Google Analytics is active on your website, click on "Site Details" from your Dashboard.
Scroll down to "Google Analytics" in the "Integrations" section. If the Google Analytics Profile Tracking ID begins with "G" as seen in the following screenshot, you can stop here because your site is already running the new Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
If the Google Analytics Profile Tracking ID being with "UA-" as seen in the following screenshot, you will need to follow the steps below.
Note: You must make these changes before July 1, 2023 in order to continue to receive data about your site.
Step 1 - Upgrade from UA to GA4
Google has put together a detailed walkthrough that explains how to setup a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Property ID for a site that already has a Universal Analytics Profile ID attached to it. Click here for the Google support article.
Step 2 - Disable the old / existing Google Analytics Integration
Click on the red "Disable" button next to the existing Profile ID that starts with "UA-"
Step 3 - Set up GA4 in your SiteSwan website
Paste your new GA4 Tracking ID in the field provided and select "Save" (it should start with "G-")
Important Information Regarding the Switch to GA4 According to Google
- Until July 1, 2023, you can continue to use and collect new data in your Universal Analytics properties.
- After July 1, 2023, you'll be able to access your previously processed data in your Universal Analytics property for at least six months. We know your data is important to you, and we strongly encourage you to export your historical reports during this time.
- If you haven't already created a new Google Analytics 4 property before early 2023, the Setup Assistant will create one for you. This new Google Analytics 4 property will have some of the same basic features, such as goals/conversions and Google Ads links, that you have in your corresponding Universal Analytics property. You will be able to opt out of this directly in the Setup Assistant or in the notification banner that will soon appear.
- In the coming months, we'll provide a future date for when existing Universal Analytics properties will no longer be available. After this future date, you'll no longer be able to see your Universal Analytics reports in the Analytics interface or access your Universal Analytics data via the API.
